I have seen this occur when there is a massive permission change using a 3rd
party admin program, and maybe the OS's own. Once the full has run, the
incremental backups clear the archive bit from simple file changes. There is
a possibility that a problem may be caused temporarily by robocopy also, but
again things return to normal after the first full.

I don't know about the client version mismatch but this sounds like standard
W2K archive bit behavior.. the icremental backup will not clear the archive
bit ...the file will be backed up till the next full backup (which clears
it).
