Building on what Ed said, there are good and bads to this technique.  I
think it would be valuable exercise for us (all) to list them.  Here's my
start to the list:

Goods
o since multiple systems can mount (via CIFS and NFS) the same file system,
this would allow multiple systems to back up to the same file system
o CIFS and NFS protocols are mature, widely implemented and commonly
understood


Bads
o access data via CIFS/NFS is tons more overhead than accessing it via SCSI.
That said, the current crop of TCP/IP offload engine (TOE)-equipped LAN
cards can greatly lessen the impact of the network protocol processing on
both the client and server end.
