If your st patch is at the right level, then placing entries in st.conf
is "optional" for SDLT320. However if you are on the wrong patch level
there may be no native support for your drives. This is a bad thing because
Solaris will just assume defaults and treat it like some ancient obsolete
generic tape drive. Performance isn't the only issue here, there is
actually a potential to lose data, particularly on spanning tapes. I'm not
saying that this WILL happen, but without configuring st.conf you cannot
know.
