NetWorker Management Console 3.1, targeted for release in Q1 2004 & beta in
September/October, will show shared devices by their hardware id, so if you
have 10 hosts sharing 4 tape devices, you'll only see 4 tape devices, rather
than 40. That should quieten things down a bit for you. You can then explode
any drive to see the paths associated with it. For those using
AlphaStor/SmartMedia, the logical device will show which actual path that is
being used rather than just the logical device name.

NetWorker 7 has an audit trail on who modifies resources, and what they
changed. But I must admit not why the changed them. Again NMC goes further
in that it has a full audit trail of which user did exactly what, even as
far as labelling and loading tapes.

NMC 3.1 will also provide the ability to create/edit/delete Networker Access
Control Lists.

Anyone interested in being a Beta site?

I would even take the idea a step further,

I should be possible to display the comment field, or an additional alias
field, in the administration gui instead of the name of the tape drives.
That way we could get a much "quieter" view of the devices.

Bye

I agree; having a comment attribute in every resource is definately a
great step forwards.

However, I don't think that it goes far enough. Being able to attach a
comment to every attribute would be more useful still. That way you
could do things like document why a particular setting is not as dumb
as it first looks, or maintain a modification history for the
attribute.
