I think the issue here is that share permissions are stored in the registry.
File permissions are stored on the files via NTFS.

So if changes are made to the share permissions then system state restore
would have to be done to get these back.

If you make changes to the permissions on the NTFS permissions then file is
changed (there was some real nastiness pre sp3 with FRS and the change
journal seeing group policies updating the NETLOGON shares but this is off
topic).

If you change the share permissions then the file share is changed and thus
only the registry is backed up.

Hi Terry,

did you read my message ?

The problem does not involve Legato, it involves Microsoft only. If the
System does not record the change then the backup application, that means any
backup application, cannot detect the change. The suggestion to use the
Change Journal was the best until now but that will no do anything about
share permissions.

Also, is is useless to make this an RFE, because (it this ever gets pasts
first level support) the changes do get backed up.
Every change to share permissions and the shares it self get backed up, if
configured correctly, with every backup.
I don't want to insult anybody, the statements that this is information is
not backed up must come from either inexperienced Windows NT/2000
administrators or *nix administrators.

If you organise the transport (and pay for it, very important) I will send
you a case of beer if you can prove that share permissions and share
definitions are not backed up ;-) I will deliver the case to the
Munich/Nuernberg office, or will you come and pick it up yoursel ?

Bye
Ernie

Hi Kenneth

This would be a good RFE to submit to Legato, IMHO.

If u change NTFS persmissions Legato will see it as a change.

I u change share permissions Legato will not

I found this out the hard way on a 70GB drive.
