Did you ftp in both directions (from client>server and server>client)?
Backup the server itself, see if the speed is satisfactory and prove that
the system is capable of faster backups.
Are you running any antivirus software?
Use a reasonable size of data for the test so that mount times of tapes do
not greatly impact the results
Can you use network cards that are not SysKonnect SK-9843 for a test and see
if the low performance persists?
