I manually recycle tapes because I don't have that much data. I have plenty
of disk space so I set the browse and retention time for all clients to one
year. I like to keep my configuration as simple as possible, and not have
lots of client definitions for each host just so that I can get different
retention times. You can fairly easily write a script run daily out of cron
that uses mminfo (mminfo -a -r "volume, volaccess, pool") to find the last
time the volume was written/labeled, the pool and volume name and determine
if the media is ready to be overwritten by whatever criteria you wish. Have
the script send you mail when there are tapes to be recycled. This seems
cleaner and simpler to me.
