Hey All!

I have a problem here.

To cut a long story short, after messing around with things like
patching the OS I can't access my jukebox at all through Networker - I
have a permanent "Resource temporarily unavailable" error.

Here's the long version:

I was running Networker 6.03 under Irix 6.5.8 until the beginning of the
year with no major issues at all. Everything worked well as long as
there were enough tapes for things to happen.

The hardware is an SGI Origin 2000 with an Overland Neo jukebox with two
SuperDLT-1 drives and 25 slots.

There was one significant oddity though - Irix 6.5.8 didn't recognise
the SDLT drives until I'd edited /var/sysgen/master.d/scsi to add an
entry for the SDLT drives as detailed on the Overland web site. However
the compressing devices didn't compress and the noncompressing device
did compress so using /dev/rmt/tps3d11nrnsvc gave no compression and
/dev/rmt/tps3d11nrnsv gave me what I wanted. All was fine for 18 months
that way.

on Jan 2nd or so I upgraded from Irix 6.5.8 to 6.5.17

This was fairly painless - after I'd realised that the OS upgrade had
overwritten /var/sysgen/master.d/scsi so it needed to be edited again.

After this however anything I tried to do on the backup system resulted
in the "Resource temporarily unavailable" error. So, I removed the
jukebox via the GUI and added it again with jbconfig and all was well
for a month. Apparently. Read on!

At the beginning of February though I found that my full backup wouldn't
fit on it's usual number of tapes. On closer investigation I found that
I was now only getting exactly 112GB per tape instead of the 200 to
300GB I had been getting. Aha, I thought, the Irix upgrade fixed the
compressing/noncompressing device issue. I then deleted the jukebox via
the GUI and put it back with jbconfig, this time using the compressing
devices. I did this a couple of times, even trying a new name, "fred"
instead of "neo" and I still get the "Resource temporarily unavailable"
error.

mt -f <tapedevice> status works find on both tape drives.

inquire gives me this:
[email protected]:QUANTUM SuperDLT1 2323|Tape, /dev/rmt/tps3d11nrnsvc
[email protected]:OVERLANDNEO Series 0228|Autochanger (Jukebox)
[email protected]:QUANTUM SuperDLT1 2323|Tape, /dev/rmt/tps7d10nrnsvc

plus all the disk drives etc.

mt status, rewind, and weof all work fine on both the tape devices.

I then tried upgrading Networker from 6.0.3 to 6.1.3 but it made no
difference. I kept a backup of /nsr and all it's stuff though, so I can
go back.

Please help!

Legato are unlikely to help here since the "official" way of supporting
SDLT under Irix is to get some BS "tape personality daemon" that needs
an expensive license, whereas what we have was working fine. I'm
guessing there's a lock file somewhere that needs to go, but hey, what
do I know?

Thanks in advance
