Can I add an addendum to this, and ask a question?
It appears that if a tape becomes recyclable due to expiration of the data
on it, it doesn't get marked (R). If you manually recycle the tape, it does
get marked as (R). The tape still gets used either way , but I wonder why
networker does this?

My thought is that it is a last ditch effort to use the oldest tapes (with
truly expired data) first in a jukebox setting......

What a saga this is turning into!

When a tape becomes recyclable, it is ALWAYS marked read-only, indicated by
(R) in several of the NetWorker screens. Of course it is read-only, you
can't write any more data to it until it has been recycled! It can be
recycled by NetWorker into the same pool in all circumstances except when it
is also marked as manually recyclable. When NetWorker recycles it, the
read-only flag is removed. To automatically recycle into another pool does
NOT (I repeat NOT) require Auto Media Management to be enabled.

If you wish a tape to recycle into a different pool, then there are two
flags in the pool resource, "Recycle to another pool" and "Recycle from
another pool", and these must be set on the appropriate pools. Doing this
also does NOT require Auto Media Management to be enabled.

If you wish NetWorker to label previously unlabelled tapes, this is when you
need Auto Media Management.

NetWorker will only recycle a volume when it needs to satisfy a mount
request.

NetWorker will also not recycle recyclable volumes in standalone tape
drives, unless you enable Auto Media Management on that drive, this is
slightly different to AMM in jukeboxes because it needs to periodically poll
the drive to check the contents.

END OF DEBATE!
