Robert,
I have found to my surprise that Linux (8.0) will dynamically (after
reboot) change the device names for the tapes.
My suggestion to solve your problem would be:
1. Connect all tapes and reboot your Linux machine.
2. Use inquire to check that you see all tapes and the auto-changer.
3. Open the changer door and insert a tape into the first drive.
4. Use the "mt" command to rewind the tape.
5. Use tar to write and read back from the tape.
6. Note the device name you had to use for this drive.
7. Eject the tape from the drive
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for your additional drives.
9. Run jbconfig and now use the device names as found earlier in the
procedure starting with physical drive 1 and ending with 3.

This should do it if you do not have real hardware/cabling problems.
Regards,
        Itzik

Subject: [Networker] Troubleshooting Library problem?

Need suggestions on helping determine where my DLT subsystem is
failing. I have an Overland DLT library connected to a Linux SCSI Legato
Networker (6.1.2) server.

Backing up to the file devices is working absolutely great. The DLT
is generating errors.

Using the Library's front pannel I can move tapes around all day
without effort, mount, unmount, clean drives, etc. Using legato to
mount a tape generates a "read open error, invalid argument".

Executing inquire I get this:

root@legato:/etc/LGTOuscsi# ./inquire
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg0
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg1
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg2
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg3
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg4
[email protected]:FUJITSU MAN3367MC 0107|Disk, /dev/sg5
[email protected]:OVERLANDLXB 0516|Autochanger (Jukebox),
/dev/sg6
[email protected]:QUANTUM DLT7000 204B|Tape, /dev/nst0

but in the dmessage I'm getting this: root AT legato DOT sea:/usr/local/sbin#
dmesg
sym53c875-2-<5,*>: FAST-10 WIDE SCSI 20.0 MB/s (100.0 ns, offset 15)
sym53c875-2-<5,*>: FAST-10 WIDE SCSI 20.0 MB/s (100.0 ns, offset 15)

The 5 indicates my tape drive however I'll get those for each device if
I wait long enough or do enough different operations.

The system has 3 tape devices at addresses 3,4 and 5. I've unplugged 3
and 4 for now. I've done musical chairs with my cables, replaced the
cable from the server to the library, the cable frm the drive to the
scsi chain as well. I can get these errors removing any component.

:wq!
