No problem to define new zones with a production SAN. You can use the Brocade
Web tools and Zone admin to define new alias , new zones and include them in
a config. I always use port level zoning (hardware zoning). After defining
your new config, you have to save it in the switch memory with a cfgsave. 

You have to define an alias for : port where a server HBA is connected (1);
                                  port where a tape is connected (2);
                   a zone with  : alias (1) and (2)
Include the zone in your config.

We are using Compaq/Brocade switches.  I am beginning to think my best design
might be to add  additional HBAs to the Cluster server and ZONE the switch so
that my disk, tape drives/MDR  do not share the same bus.

Any idea how difficult it would be to zone a switch after it is already setup
and in production?

You say all servers can see the tapedrives?

This is not recommended. Actually you should in a fabric environment zone
tapedrives so that only the hosts that need the device could see them and
only the tapedrives. The hosts which should be able to see the drives, would
not be able to see eachother. This could be done by port-level- zoning or by
WWN-zoning. My guess is that if you have  a Compaq SAN, this is BROCADE
switches right? This should help.

Also you mention servers sets the drives to clean, this is a known W2K bug
which is mentioned at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;Q319313 this also applies a hotfix to correct this problem.

Depending on which HBA's you're using you could also do some binding at the
host-level to WWN/device.

The MDR's are preferrably set to fabric-mode in a fabric environment, aswell
as the HBA's.
