It's normal behavior if your library does not support barcodes, or maintain
an "element status".

For example, our ADIC Scalar supports both and an inventory of 48 DLT slots
takes a few seconds.  Our 10 slot Overland does not, and therefor must read
the physical label on the tapes each time we do and inventory (about 20
minutes).
