Roger you should try this on another tape device or check your
configiguration. I have seen this before and it turned out to be hardware
related. Check the st.conf file or try another drive. Also try the scanner
on a recent backup volume. You can scan/recover to similar OSes using the
method you mention. You also didn't mention the type of data you are seeking
to recover. You can scan/recover from UNIX to UNIX and UNIX to LINUX using
this method. You cannot scan/recover from UNIX to Windows using your
method. To relocate the recovered data use:

scanner /dev/rmt/0cbn -x uasm -rv -m /=/someplace

And don't forget the -i option to resolve any file conflicts.

I am receiving a write failed, Broken pipe error when
scanning recovering using scanner.

scanner -v /dev/rmt/0cbn -x uasm -rv

These tapes are from a different solaris system
decommissioned a couple of years ago.

Hostname is different, but both hosts are UNIX.

Any ideas on the error and is this OK to recover many
different systems using scanner and uasm without
building the databases?

-RM
