Marilyn,
It's quite simple :
Just using DLT tapes, barcode like ABC001 for data tape and CLN001
for cleaning tape is enough.
The goal of the suffix is to indicate the lib the type of medium being
used
for lib supporting media mixing (be aware Legato has problem with mixed
medium type into a same lib without alphastor, ACSLS or smartmedia
because
Networker doesn't take care yet about the TYPE of medium. Prob are
during
inventory -loading medium into wrong type of drive- or during recover
-again,
loading the requested tape into an available drive, type being ignored)
To make a difference between DLT and SLDT mediums, a S or S1 has been
added. So, ABC001 will always refer to a DLT, barcode ABC001.
SLDT Tapes will be recognized by the lib based on the S or S1 but
most of the lib (like ATL or Compaq) will show the entire barcode
(ABC002S or ABC003S1 or CLN002S or CLN003S1).
Storagetek ones (L700 for e.g.) will drop the medium type
and will give to Legato ABC002 or ABC003, causing trouble if you
get a DLT ABC001 tape with a SLDT ABC001S, both reported as ABC001.
For LT0 mediums , suffix is "L1" (ABC004L1)
The best advise to use is, when ordering or printing your own barcodes
is to use ranges like
000000 -> 199999 -> DLT
200000 -> 399999 -> SDLT
400000 -> 599999 -> LTO
600000 -> 799999 -> STK 9840.
It allow you 200000 tapes per range.
Doing so, with or without media recognition char, you will never get
troubles.
A good way to get the real barcode list : sjirdtag command
to use like
sjirdtag /dev/changer/mc<?> -> for CPQ/HP Tru64 Unix 5.x
sjirdtag /dev/mc<??> -> for CPQ/HP Tru64 Unix 4.x
sjirdtag scsidev@<b>.<t>.<l> -> for all system. Use inquire
command to get the Bus,
Target
and lun infos.
Hope that helps,
Thierry

Subject: Re: [Networker] AW: [Networker] Barcode Labels ( 6charactors--
8charactors ?)
Itzik,
Could you (or anyone else) explain a little further about these new
barcoded tape labels with the D, S1, etc. suffix on them? Will all new
labels come with the suffix? Is it required? What needs to be done if
we
want to keep using six character labels with NetWorker? If we "set the
field length to 6", is that in NetWorker or on the library? Do I have
to
have someone from the manufacturer change my library or can I do it?
We recently started using an ATL P4000 with 8 SDLT drives. We tried
using
the labels supplied by ATL, but didn't like the 8 character labels, all
ending in S1. Of course we had no idea what the S1 was there for, so we
went back to our old 6 character DLT labels which have been working
fine.
At least the SDLT data cartridges seem to work fine with the old six
character labels.
The old label didn't work so well for the SDLT cleaning cartridge. With
the old format label we received an error stating "Medium incompatible"
when we tried to load the cleaning tape into a drive. Changing to a new
cleaning label with the S1 suffix resolved the problem.
Thanks for any info you can provide.
