You might also need to do a 'ping <client>' on the client and the backup
server. nslookup will interrogate name server services (like DNS), but
doesn't (I believe) look at the local HOSTS file. Since this local HOSTS
file is checked (on all/most systems) first, you need to make sure you don't
have an entry you don't want lurking in there.

Emmanuel,

Domains don't matter. Name resolution does.

In this case, the server is using one name for the client, and the client is
reporting a different name.

Do an "nslookup <client>" on the client and on the backup server. These
should match. If they do not, you can work around this by placing the name
that the client reports for itself into the alias field in the client
resource.

Subject: [Networker] backup client from another windows domain

Hello,
I'm using Networker 5.5.3,
my backup server (nt4) is on one domain and my client (windows 2000) is on
another one.
problem:
I can't backup the client, error message: "my_w2k_client is not a
registered client"...
I modifiy host file to provide communication between them,
the network server interface is configured.
Is it a problem of:
-> network communication ? "my_w2k_client" is a dns name even if a remove
it from the client alias (because dns is not workink between the two domain)
-> NT right because there's no approbation ?
-> something else ?
