Jeff,

You might want to take a look at BMC's SQL-Backtrack. Does sybase and
oracle backups, UNIX or NT, full and incrementals, on-line or off-line,
and to disk or to tape. We just bought an enterprise license and are
moving away from RMAN and exports to disks.
Upside: restores are painless and can be done without a Networker Admin
(the DBA's can do everything from the SQL-BT application)
Downside: it's a bit pricy (as is every BMC product).

Cheers
Koen

Subject: [Networker] sybase and oracle backups

Question for anyone who uses Legato to backup sybase & oracle databases.

We currently use Networker 6.1.1 on Solaris. We backup over 100 UNIX
clients and a handfull of SGIs and one NT box.

The powers that be here are wanting to know if we can use Legato to
backup their sybase and oracle servers. We currently use Tivoli (which
we hate) to back up these machines.

My questions are:

1. Does anyone who does this have any good or bad things we should know
about.

2. Does anybody who runs this stage the data to disk? How does this
work?

3. If to tape how do you insure a tape is available for coldbackups? Our
DBAs don't want the database down long.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
