[Networker] win2k AD/sysvol and a c: saveset recovery
2002-08-22 00:45:01
For peoples information a scenario you need to be careful of. It will of course
be obvious to some.
In an AD environment think carefully before recovering the winnt directory.
As a test of the backup/restore the following was done.
Backup C:\Winnt.
Do a saveset recovery of C:\winnt saveset relocating it to d:\recover\winnt.
Delete thecontents of D:\recover and notice errors in deleting some files in
D:\recover\winnt\....\SYSVOL.
Investigation showed the recovery had included the
D:\recover\winnt\....\SYSVOL directory in the AD File Replication
service (FRS).
Deleting files in this directory deleted them from c:\winnt\....\SYSVOL.
It was necessary to copy the sysvol files from another AD server.
D:\recover\winnt\....\SYSVOL is stll part of the replication.
The docs don't mention this effect except in reference to system state
recovery. They assume you know what you are
doing.
Other implications
A saveset recover c: from one system using AD to another to look for some
files. What will happen with SYSVOL?
I assume you can do file level recovery and exclude sysvol. I have not tried it.

Kit
