Previously I have used a script I have written that uses rsync and hard links to do Yearly, months, hourly and 15 minute backups.  I am now setting up a system for another client that uses a NFS (with a NAS).  I have looked at a lot of different backup systems and non of them give me what I want without using lots of disk space.  They all require keeping at least 2 full backups.

So I am hoping Bacula will do what i want.  Have looked at the documentation a bit and it seems promising but thought it was worth checking with those who use it in anger.

So my requirements are
  • Use NFS to hold backups
  • Store yearly backups indefinably
  • Store monthly backups for a year
  • Store daily backups for a month
  • Story hourly backups for a day
  • Be very efficient with backup storage. i.e. only hold each file (version of file once).  I understand the catalog will use space but dont want the actual data repeated.
