Subject: [Bacula-users] Change of volume retention period ignored

Hi all,

Bacula version: 5.0.0.

In a client pool config, I have changed the lowered the retention period for the volumes and restarted the bacula director. I can still see volumes which are now not following the retention period time and autoprune is set to yes. Should it not remove these old volumes after I have lowered the retention period and then restarted?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Waqar.

1. If you change retention periods you must issue a command to update this value on prior created volumes: update > volumes > all volumes from all pools (bconsole).
2. Bacula volume recycling is an atomic transaction and can only happen if every single job in the volume were stored for the minimum period given by the Volume Retention.
3. A nice way to ensure your are not writing stuff to the same volume anymore is to use the directive Volume Use Duration that changes its status from append to used, and this way you know almost for sure when your volume will be able to be recycled.
