Lots of small files on hard disks (or hard drive arrays) will not get
anywhere near same throughput as few larger files. One reason is
seeks. It takes time to seek to each file. Make sure you have
attribute spooling on as well because if you do not each file will put
an entry in the database at the time the file gets to tape.
