With compressed tapes (DLT, LTO ...) there is no fixed max capacity.
The drive writes until the entire tape is used with varying
compression rates depending on your data.

However if you use /dev/st0 instead of /dev/nst0 yes with that it is
possible the drive was rewound and then overwritten.
