That's the official rule of what Bacula supports:
- SD should be the same version as director
- FD should be the same or smaller version as director (and SD)

Exactly. That would make Bacula more or less unusable. But it is not so.

That is not the scenario Bacula is designed for, so you'll have to make
allowances.

Neither of the two. It is never a good idea to mix packages from
different major releases of a distribution.
I don't use Ubuntu myself, but if it's anything like openSUSE or CentOS
then you'll be better off using packages from the Bacula community.
There you can expect to find builds of the most recent Bacula version
for all supported releases of an OS distribution.

As I wrote last time already, that's the last resort if everything
else fails, ie. if you cannot find readymade packages that fit
your needs.

The most recent one, of course. That way you can keep all existing FDs
because you are sure none of them is newer than your director.

The effort is the same whether you compile an older version or
