I think I found the problem.

As I said I reset the tapes with:
mt rewind; mt weof ; mt rewind

In that case (although 'label barcodes' seemed to work):
3305 Autochanger "load slot 1, drive 0", status is OK.
3905 Device "LTO-4" (/dev/nsa0) open but no Bacula volume is mounted.

Now I reset the tapes in the same way but with 'mt weof 2'.  This gives:
3305 Autochanger "load slot 1, drive 0", status is OK.
Wrote label to prelabeled Volume "AHK836L4" on device "LTO-4" (/dev/nsa0)

Does this seem plausible?
