Hello,

From time to time, I like to send out a status report to give you a feel where
we are going from the developer's point of view.

Bacula Design Process:
===============

Last week when I was traveling there was a nice discussion about "Better
support for portable clients", but the problem is that sometimes especially
if you come into the thread late, it is very difficult to have a global view
of the emails that were exchanged. I lamented a bit about this saying that
we need a better design process, and Mike Ruskai suggested starting a Bacula
blog (many thanks).

At first I was a bit skeptical, but I did enable Wordpress blogging for Bacula
on the Source Forge site, and a few of us have tried it out. It is a bit of a
learning curver for a non-blogger like myself, but the system look quite
promissing. Some of the posts that I have made are still a bit rough around
the edges, but that should improve with time.

If you are interested in participating in the Bacula design process, I suggest
that you take a look at:

  http://sourceforge.net/apps/wordpress/bacula/

where you can read about some of our current projects, design specifications,
and performance testing. You must login to Source Forge to be able to add
comments.

Most of you probably don't realize how much time I spend on design
specifications, because I consider design to be one most important aspects of
developing Bacula. Since the project doesn't involve a huge number of
programmers, the design process has been a bit informal, with just text file
notes or emails between developers. Hopefully this blog will help improve
the process.

MySQL bug:
========

Due to the nightly regression testing, we have discovered a segmentation fault
in the MySQL server (a MySQL bug that causes Bacula Jobs to fail). For the
moment, the problem seems to be limited to:

  OpenSolaris 2009.06 with MySQL 5.1 (5.1.30)

The bug report filed on this issue (by someone else) is at:

   http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=11351

Thanks to Marco and Philipp for their regression testing and tracking down the
source of the problem.

Bacula Version 3.0.3:
==============

We are planning to release a bug fix update to the current release version
(3.0.2) probably by mid-October. The regression tests are showing it to be
quite stable. It is ready for release, but we are hoping to find time to
correct a few more bugs before the release.

Source Forge:
==========

There are a number of annoying things about Source Forge where we post our
Bacula releases. The most recent one is that their newly designed web
interface has a place on each project page that shows a vote of people who
visit the page. What annoys me about it is that it is annonymous, and many
of the votes cast have no comment on them, so if it is a negative vote, it is
not possible to understand why.

Bottom line: I encourage all of you to cast your vote on the Source Forge
Bacula page. If you give us a thumbs down, please include a reason. If you
give us a thumbs up -- thanks in advance.

Travel:
=====

Recently I did a bit of traveling -- first 4 days in Moscow as part of the
Economic Promotion delegation of the canton of Vaud where I live in
Switzerland. It was very interesting, and I had the good luck to be able to
visit the offices of AltLinux. They have created a backup release based on
their Linux OS and Bacula which can be used as a backup appliance, and they
have made some nice submissions to the project.

Last week I visited Köln (Cologne in English I think) Germany where dassIT
held an all day Bacula conference on the 23rd of September. It was very nice
to meet and discuss with a large group of Bacula users (something like 55-60
people). Hopefully in the not so distant future we can organize more such
Bacula conferences.

Thanks for using Bacula,

Kern
