Are you using udev?

udev-124 works nicely with /dev/tape/by-id/ to get persistent naming.

You need a kernel with the sg4 block device enabled (development driver).

Email  me if you want to go that route.

I have 5 drives all nicely organised, even if they are not all plugged 
in at the same time.
