These "social networking" sites are mostly a front for address harvesting.

They have a masked way of asking for people's yahoo/hotmail/whatever
logins/passwords then login to the account, scrape all addresses and spam
the lot - if you're lucky.

If you're unlucky then they'll archive all mail folder contents, etc for
marketing or other purposes.

Social networking or social engineering? You decide...
