What version of Samba are you using? There is an issue in regards to newer versions of samba having different verbose output then samba has had in the past. BackupPC doesn't get some information it's expecting causing it to think there is a problem. More details from an earlier email thread here:

Having some issues trying to backup a Samba share and trying to determine just what exactly the error is. From what I can see from the error log it has gotten all the way to the end of this particular share and then the error message below, without too much detail that I can see.

The command being executed is:
/usr/bin/smbclient \\\\dwlaptop\\DTW-Consulting -I 192.168.15.82 -U dwilliams -E -d 1 -c tarmode\ full -Tc 
The end of the error log file:
