The backuppc rsync implementation is a complete rewrite in perl to
permit comparing the local compressed copy with the remote native
rsync's view of the uncompressed version so it is sort of amazing that
it exists at all.   I think the upcoming 4.x version will use native
rsync on the server side too, but I haven't looked at the details of
how that will work or if it supports any extra features besides not
having to send the whole directory tree before starting the file
comparisons.
