Les, yes i'm using ubuntu 14.04. would you recommend another linux distro instead which installing backuppc will be simpler and more reliable to get it going using the rpm you mention? where could i get the rpm from?

for some reason apache doesn't wan't to execute the cgi and it's downloading it on the browser.

this is the latest apache configuration if anyone wanna take a look:

Backuppc is not php. Are you using the ubuntu deb package? It
should set the web server up for you but I'm only familar with the rpm
version.
