hi Tom,

as of your "Permission denied (13)" - problem
please recheck the permissions for the mentioned folders
this should be set to at least read-permission for "System"
this is always an issue when users create own directories belonging only to them as they think this is more secure :)
as in this cases it's even the oposite: so even your antivirus-app is not able to acces those dirs :)

and please try using a long password using alphanumerical (i.e password4myserverATwork instead of a short cryptical like ":-~)
so you prevent issues with special characters like :.,;"'`

and for your tests using command-line try a password like passwort :)
and remember to change it after your tests :)))

Greetings
Mike

Server: x226.rbhs.lan running BackupPC 2.1.2 (old I know)
Client: W7 SP1 running cygwin-rsyncd-2.6.8_0

BackupPC reports “auth failed on module cDrive”. The rsyncd.log on the W7 client reports “connect from x226.rbhs.lan; password mismatch”.

1. I’ve double, triple and quadruple checked the password in rsyncd.secrets and /mnt/backuppc/pc/daved-hp/config.pl.
2. I’ve removed the password from the backuppc account user login, the secrets file and the client’s config.pl file on the server and get the same errors.
3. “strict modes = false” is set in the rsyncd.conf on the client.
4. The W7 client account “backuppc” is listed in the Backup Operators group on the client. The client account login pwd is the same as the rsyncd.secrets pwd.
5. The C: drive on the client is not shared; it shouldn’t need to be because of #4 above. When I do share it as “cDrive” with client account “backupp” having full control of the share, the result is the same.
6. Rsync is running as a service on the W7 client.
7. The firewall allows traffic from/to the backuppc server. When I shut off the firewall, backuppc and rsyncd report the same error condition. The firewall is actually controlled by Symantec Endpoint 11.

When I rsync files from the command line on the backuppc server using  “rsync -av backuppc@daved-hp::cDrive .”, I get a series of permission denied errors.

receiving file list ...
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/Documents and Settings" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Application Data" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Desktop" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Documents" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Favorites" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Start Menu" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync: opendir "ygdrive/c/Windows/system32/c:/ProgramData/Templates" (in cDrive) failed: Permission denied (13)
…etc…

TIA for any troubleshooting ideas.
