Hello everyone,

we've been using BackupPC for a long time now and have been happy with
it ever since.
Recently we have replaced the underlying storage file system with ZFS,
which is mounted on the BackupPC machine via NFS. We're using both
ZFS compression and ZFS deduplication with good results.
(Hint do everyone planning to do the same: don't even think of trying
that without a fast SSD- or DRAM-based ZIL device or without disabling
the ZFS intent log, should you be courageous enough).

Now with ZFS already doing deduplication, we've come to the conclusion
that BackupPC's pooling mechanism is essentially pointless and a waste
of resources. So we simply tried moving the /pool dir to a different
location where BackupPC cannot access it, making sure that BackupPC also
couldn't create a new /pool dir on its own.

So far, this seems to work well:
- - Backup jobs still work as expected
- - BackupPC_link jobs fail (as expected) with a mkdir BackupPC/pool:
  Permission denied error
- - however, as all files are still available in the respective BackupPC/pc
directories, restoring seems to work flawlessly

The obvious question:
Is this a good idea, or will it break BackupPC at some point?
Is anyone doing the same?

And: Wouldn't it be nice to have this "non-pooled mode" as a configurable
option for BackupPC? With ZFS becoming more and more popular, this could
be interesting for other users as well.

Regards,

Clemens
