An offsite server is the most reliable IMO.

External USB disks is probably "more affordable" if reliability isn't
important.

If your backups are important to you, get/rent a server or virtual server
and set up that as a BackupPC server. It needn't be very expensive. If
your backups aren't important to you, don't do them!
