I had to do a system re-install anyway to take care of another problem 
(not strictly necessary but it was far simpler and probably quicker), 
and thats what I ended up doing.  I am curious why it wouldn't have 
worked... or more specifically, if it won't work, why does the program 
even give you the opportunity to change _TOPDIR_?
