Success!!

i upgraded all software (apt-get upgrade) on both the client and
server (openssl was upgraded on the client), recreated the
public/private keys and now i am no longer getting the 'blacklisted'
error from the auth_log. backup job started successfully without the
"unable to read 4 bytes" error.

thanks for everyones help. this sure is a very useful and friendly forum.
