It would be great if we have a repeatable case that we can debug.
If you don't mind, you might want to disable backups on this host
as we try different things.

If the backup is large it would be helpful to (temporarily) exclude
some of the other top-level directories and see if it still happens.
The best situation would be a small backup that still fails since
as we turn more debugging on the output can get very verbose.

Can you email me the XferLOG.bad.z file offlist?  It might be helpful
to increase $Conf{XferLogLevel} to 5 or so and re-run.
