Just to add my 0.02c worth to the discussion....
I don't like a lot of hardware raid because they don't provide a
consistent interface to the raid status. With software raid, every
machine regardless of linux (kernel) version, distro, or libraries, they
all have identical status information in /proc/mdstat.

Personally, I use hobbit (1) to monitor all my servers, and have a small
script which polls /proc/mdstat every 5 mins to check that everything is
working nicely. This has been in use for many years (well before mdadm
days) and still functions quite nicely.

I've recently used a couple of the 3ware sata raid controllers, and they
didn't seem too painful once you get over the learning curve of
installing the web interface/etc... BTW, there is a command line
interface as well, which I managed to modify my above script to cater to
as well. Not all machines live near a person who will ask "Why is there
an alarm going off?".

Currently, the difference between HW and SW RAID is basically a cost
consideration... but if the customer has the budget, I would suggest the
3ware controllers are a good option.

Regards,
Adam
