I've got to write about this issue again. Since my upgrade to BackupPC
3.1.0, the BackupPC_nightly job doesn't seem to do anything. The log
looks like this:

If I run BackupPC_nightly manually (as the backuppc user), it outputs
statistics to stdout and actually removes files. The mail sending works
(see log) as well as log file rotation, but the run only takes about 40
seconds which is far too short for my large pool (which keeps growing
now).

I took a look at the source but couldn't find anything.

What to check next?
