best way to backup a local ZFS

Hi,
I want to backup a local ZFS filesystem (or parts of it) Since this is
on a Sun X4500 with 34TB space, copying this to a holding disk seems not
feasible. So I would disable the holding disk, make an zfs snapshot
before backup, backup the snapshot and delete it. Is that the right way
(tm) to do it. Are there any pitfalls?
