We've been using a HP 2024 LTO3 autoloader (24 slot) for about 1 year now.

It's been reliable and damn quick (50MB a sec on average).

Controlled by amanda with help from chg-ztx and mtx

Runs pretty much without intervention, just like all good backup systems.

Hi,

I'm currently thinking about buying a LTO3 or LTO4 autoloader, because my old Superloader 1280 DLT seams to die soon.

What are your experiences with amanda/mtx and LTO3/LTO4 drives/ autoloaders? Any suggestions?

I have good performance with the overland arcvault24 with 2 x lto-3.
Just make sure that the server can handle the i/o to the drives. LTO4
is a hungry little beast, have plenty of holddisk! I have 2 SATA 1TB
disks in a logical volume with big stripes just for that.

I know there are lots of people using LTO and happy with it.

Just wanted to note that I have been very happy with my AIT5. So, if you are switching types anyway, I think it is worth taking a look at AIT5. I made the jump from individual DDS/3 on all servers, so I had no commitment and looked at everything. The choice of AIT5 vs. LTO4 is really separate from particular vendor and library.

I was also extremely price conscious in my choices, so I looked at Overland and liked them, but couldn't come up with the budget to buy one. My LIB-162 from Sony is a carousel changer, which is mechanically simpler than the robots. So it was less expensive, and I'm hoping that it will be more reliable in the long run when I'm out of the 3 year warranty and my department fails to come up with any kind of service contracts. ;-)
