Well, it will stay an unknown. As I looked further, I found
there were tons of gzip's and sendbackup's still around from
several days runs. As an unrelated issue, there were several
updatedb's and it related programs hanging around too.
I killed them off and tried to run amdump for just that one
client. It hung without getting even one estimate. So I did
the unusual, I rebooted the client. First time this year.
After that I ran an amdump for that client and it ran fine.
So looks like I'm back in business but with mystery unsolved.
