The difficulty with such an approach would be maintenance. You go
through the effort of modifying the code, then an update to amanda comes
out with must-have bug fixes, or new features you really want, and you
have to go through and apply your changes again, with the possibility
that the code you changed may have changed so that patches you try to
build don't apply correctly. It has the potential of becoming either a
management nightmare or a stagnant environment that you never have the
time to update.
