The easiest way is to wrap amanda in a script, so that when amanda is 
done, then the script runs a shutdown -h now as its final command.

I *think* this script will have to run as root in order to have access to 
that command, which means that your amanda invocation will have to be in 
the form of 'su amanda -c "amdump $configname"'

OTOH, have you considered the cost of the electricity to leave it running 
vs the greatly shortened life of the hard drives with all those 
powerdowns?  My guess is that you are multiplying the chances of needing 
to do a bare metal recovery by at least 10x by doing nightly shutdowns.  
I have drives here that haven't been intentionally shut down for the last 
8 years, but most are newer simply because I needed a bigger drive.
