Hello!

Any ideas why amrecover don't want to work? Looks like it tries to connect
a server on localhost. But whom is it trying to connect to and why is it
failing?

First amrecover connects to the index server (option -s) to the amindexd
program (listening on port 10082).
To read the backups itself it connects to the tape server (option -t) to
the amidxtaped program (listening on port 10083).

host:/tmp/rest # amrecover ppc
AMRECOVER Version 2.5.0b2. Contacting server on localhost ...

amindexd seems ok.

amrecover> setdisk /var

amrecover> settape file:/tmp
Using tape "file:/tmp" from server localhost.

The following files are needed: /tmp/hold/20060206030502/host.do.main._var.0

Continue [?/Y/n]?

Extracting from file /tmp/hold/20060206030502/host.do.main._var.0
amrecover: Could not read features from control socket

But there is no amindexd listening here, I believe.
