I have the same problem with a DDS3 tape drive (HP-C1537A), and it seems
that the drive / driver returns immediately after a rewind operation, but
a following write returns unsuccessfully if the rewind did not complete yet.
Maybe there is a jumper or SCSI option to disable this behaviour, but I did
go into these details (yet).
