The date represented by the 'X' is the date the tape was last used.
Since it is a new tape there is no date, so it just displays 'X'.

Amanda will create them.

Directories. There will be a file created in them during the backup that
will get updated on future runs.

Could be lots of things, most likely you either forgot to add amandad to
your inetd (or xinetd, depending on the platform) config file, you didn't
restart (x)inetd correctly after you added it, or you have some firewall
blocking the connection to itself. If you think you've got it configured,
check your system logs to see if (x)inetd even sees the connection or if
your sysntax is incorrect.
