Of course, I forgot to add that information. The mentioned
file only has one line:
./amanda

I assume that all subdirectories of /scratch will be
included by tar and that only /scratch/amanda will be
excluded.

BTW, I aready used this file when I manually run the
runtar command which gave me a normal estimate (posted in
the original message).
