Yes. (Disclaimer: I don't own one, nor did I see one ever in my life.)
To prove it, insert a scratch tape, and run the command:
amtapetype -e 35G -f /dev/yourtapedev
I expect it takes about 6 hours to run the above command.
You get the benefit to test at the same time if you really have hardware
compression disabled on the drive.
