Can't get indexing working

Freebsd 5.2.1, amanda 2.4.4p2.  I have "index yes"
in amanda.conf global section.  The dumptype I
chose includes global.  Disklist uses the correct
dumptype.  The indexdir exists and is writable by
the amanda user.  Inetd has the correct entries for
indexing.  When I start amrecover:

501 No index records for host: R4P17.gmihome.com.
 Have you enabled indexing?
