Duh.  Somehow when I rebuilt amanda, the samba support got turned off.
Because the configure script tested smbclient with \\machine\share
as an argument.

I got it turned on and everything appears to be working.

Sorry for the false alarm.  (Although that backslashing really should
go away.  smbclient has supported forward slashes forever.)
