as euclid-at-work on the IRC channel kindly explained to me, the first
attempt was correct:

> sudo amrestore -p /dev/nst0 localhost /export/home 20030520|tar tvf -

It didn't work because my testing was a little less systematic than my
email, and I actually ran the following as a test instead:

sudo amrestore -p /dev/nst0 localhost /export/home/username 20030520|tar
tvf -

Problem solvered.
